Different Reading Styles?

The friend I have lunch with reads differently than I do. As you may or may not have discovered by reading my previous blogs, my reading preferences tend to the familiar. I wouldn’t say I read widely, although I have read constantly over a few years and find that I do know and have read many authors. I tend to read historical fiction and creative nonfiction that will often lead me to true non-fiction for deeper learning. Recent examples include Erik Larson’s Dead Wake and Indianapolis by Vincent & Vladic. The sinking of the Lusitania and the Titanic have entranced me for as long as I can remember, so books about these vessels find me. As a resident of Indiana, the fate of the Indianapolis was a whole new read.

My friend reads with a book club and they pick a different book every month based on someone’s choice. She chooses to read during the day while my preference is in the evening, as a precursor to sleep. Now that I think about it, daytime reading for pleasure doesn’t fit my mindset. Daytime reading is for study and writing (my new career). I could almost say that daytime pleasure reading is a time waster for me. Ouch, did I really think that?

Over the years I have picked up interesting titles at bookstores or as giveaways at the office, or had books handed to me that someone liked. Most of these books are still on a pile in my library, or in my bedroom, or in my office. I have a very hard time getting rid of a book once it enters my domain.

That comment leads me to my thought this morning: how can I get all the books read that I want to read, that I need to read for my craft, that I should read for historical background? Guess I’ll go after this discussion in my next blog.

Have a pleasant present!
